Sydney Cruise Terminal – White Bay

The project located at White Bay Berth No 5 was redeveloped as a new world class passage terminal utilising the historical crane gantry as a feature and suspend the undulating roof designed to complement the ocean waves.

Barnwell Cambridge was engaged under a Design and Construct Contract, to take the 50% design concept to a completely documented project that meet 5 star green star design requirements, for all electrical services and feature lighting.

The demolition of various buildings and construction of the new cruise terminal involved the temporary diversions of the private HV networks & eventual disconnection. The site was then fed from new HV incoming feeders and transformers with provisions for temporary generators installations. The removal of redundant HV Transformers, associated switchgear and cabling was decontamination of hazards substances.

The site was also to be installed with two customed gangways from Spain that required detailed coordination and correspondence with the overseas supplier to ensure it also met local Australian Standards prior to delivery.

The lighting design required it to: compliment the roof design with no services allowed to be installed on the ceiling, the placement of lighting on the crane gantry required it to be inconspicuous with all cabling hidden or integrated into the structure to the approval of the heritage consultants, and highlight the sandstone wall back drop, all without affecting the local residence. The process involved detailed lighting design modelling for all aspects of the project with 3D renders and calculations. Mock ups were also required to ensure the design concept meet the approval of project stakeholders prior to installation. This lighting design was a project finalist for the NECA Lighting Awards.

Barnwell Cambridge was responsible for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of electrical services that included:

⦁ HV Substation.
⦁ Mains and submains.
⦁ Main switchboards and distribution boards.
⦁ Portable generator interface point.
⦁ HV, LV and Communications cable pathways.
⦁ General power and power lock connections.
⦁ General and specialised lighting.
⦁ Lighting control system.
⦁ UPS systems.
⦁ Communications network cabling.
⦁ Security installation.
⦁ Warf power bollards.
⦁ Fire services.
⦁ PA system.

The project was a State finalist at the NECA industry awards for the lighting design.
